Technology will shape the future of the insurance industry..

IRA's Deputy Board Chairperson Hajjat Aphwa Sebyala while attending the Pan African Bancassurance and Alternative distribution conference Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra Ghana.

Insurance practitioners participating at the first Pan African Bancassurance and Alternative Distribution conference agreed that technology will shape the future of insurance in Africa.

The conference which took place in Accra Ghana under the theme, “Innovate or Die”, brought together participants from East, West and South Africa to create a continental bancassurance and Alternative Distribution.

While making his closing remarks at the conference, the African Insurance Organisation (AIO) President Alhaj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega said there are potential benefits for banks, insurers and consumers from innovative bancassurance solutions.

“In our world of financial services, for an innovative idea to be useful, it has to be replicable without being too expensive and it has to resolve a particular need.  As such a solid enabling regulatory environment is very critical for promoting innovative financial services that reach large segments of the population whilst protecting the interests of both parties,” Kaddunabbi said adding new technologies, especially those driving digital finance will provide immense opportunities for connecting businesses across the world.

The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda has so far licensed 10 banks as bancassurance agents. This partnership between the banks and insurance companies is expected to increase access to insurance services amongst Ugandans in different parts of the country.
